Do Coaches Need Coaches?

Picture this: You’re the CEO of a company. Over the course of the fiscal year, your company’s numbers have been slowly plummeting. Turning a profit is a thing of the past, you see fellow competitors gaining and surpassing you in your industry. Your board of directors are scrambling for ideas and every move, whether it’s minuscule or microscopic is scrutinized by business tycoons, analysts or your loyal consumers.

It has been awhile, you haven’t spoken to your mentor in the last 4 months. When you opened your business 5 years ago, he was your right hand man. You couldn’t get the operation up and running without him, nearly every decision had to be perfect and approved by your mentor. Having had success in your field prior, he knew the in’s and out’s of the business world. You saw numbers increase year by year in the initial stages and while you built a solid foundation around you with a highly competent board, you always had your mentor to educate and give you sterling advice in the process. So you reach out, hitting the panic button and feeling like you’re in dire straits.

“Why didn’t I think of this before?”

You were blinded by your success and slowly began to phase out your mentor, checking in every now and then to see how his life was going and getting that occasional stock tip. Once the downturn started, you were so enamored with the potential disaster your company was facing that you forgot to turn to the person who helped you build the company in the first place. You pick up the phone, have the conversation on how where to start as it pertains to fixing your business. Obviously this won’t be an overnight success, but implementing a gameplan to get back on the Bull market will put you to sleep a little easier at night.

Coaching is something I’ve done in one form or another for the better part of 16 years. I have learned quite a few lessons from some great people. My father(a baseball coach) being able to get the best out of people with a hard nosed, throwback style from the 1950’s. Tough love but fundamentally sound principals which you use each day. The hardest working person who puts in the most work and is consistent with great habits, will consistently get better. He took kids with minimal talent and made them starters. Took troubled kids and made them all stars with passion and constant focus. Took phenomenal talents and graduated them  to the next level. His style wasn’t for everybody (Think Bobby Knight) and got him in hot water more often than not. Getting kicked out of games was his style, but he fought for and believed in us and thought it was right to argue on our behalf.

Point blank, we all are going to get where we want to be and contribute in today’s society with help from others. If you’re 12 years old and want to become a lawyer, Find that family friend whose mother is a great attorney. She will probably be kind enough (or not) to give you 20 minutes and give you tips on what steps to take. Google search some of the top lawyers in the World, read excerpts or books if they have them and soak in their experience and knowledge. Find a top school in the Country and study your ass off. Make connections, find a mentor or group and put in the tens of 1000’s of hours necessary to become a top flight lawyer.

I recently took on 2 coaches to advance my Olympic Weightlifting and conditioning for Crossfit next year. It’s helped me improve on my technique and my conditioning for when I compete. (Which will be coming in the next 4 months.) I’ve had coaches hire me to zero in on their nutrition since it’s an early of struggle for them. In the next 6 months, I will be looking to hire or work with a mentor on my business growth in exchange for personal training and nutrition coaching on my behalf. Other set’s of eyes are important when it comes to personal, spiritual, emotional, physical or business growth. Open a never before seen avenue and hire a coach or mentor to help you advance and or make a contribution to the World with newly opened gifts that you may have or are looking to discover.
